Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is the fifth largest airport in the country, and the largest hub for handling air travel in western China. Recently, with more planes and flights coming into the city, Shuangliu International Airport has also become one of the busiest airports in China – handling over 10 billion passengers during the last 5 months.

China Eastern Airlines is due to open an express flight from Chengdu to Shanghai by the end of this year, with flights scheduled for every hour during peak times. Aside from Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines also plans to increase direct flights from Chengdu to other cities. In southwest China, the airline has plans to gradually open flights to Shangri-la, Linzhi and Dali, and to increase flights to Lijiang, Tengchong, Kunming, and Xi'an. Efforts are being made to build Chengdu into a major connecting hub servicing key tourist attractions in the region. Internationally, China Eastern Airlines also plans to gradually open flights from Chengdu to cities in Japan, South Korea, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Air China has also recently opened international flights from Chengdu to Bangalore, Karachi, Nagoya, and Seoul; and has begun domestic flight connections from Chengdu to Tengchong, Yiwu, Wuxi, and Zhuhai. By the end of June, Air China will have also started flights connecting Chengdu, Lhasa and Ngari (Ali). The airline company also has plans to start Chengdu-Tokyo flights and Chengdu-Ho Chi Minh City flights later this year.
