New CPPCC Spokesperson Criticized for Claiming Mainland Milk Power Safe
Mar 05, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Addressing a question from reports about the recent milk powder limitation in Hong Kong after the First Plenary Session of the 12th National Committee on March 2, Lv Xinhua, the new spokesman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) commented that 99% of mainland milk power was up to standard and that the public, in not trusting the domestic industry, is to blame for the current scarcity problem.

Unsurprisingly, the comment was met by near universal scorn online. Netizens were quick to point that previous problems with the quality and safety of milk power have led many to be critical of the government’s regulatory role. In particular is the infamous Sanlu milk powder scandal from 2008, wherein melamine was added to the powder, poisoning an estimated 300,000, causing six infants to die and another 58,000 to be hospitalized. Many netizens argue that after this scandal (and previous ones), they no longer dare consume domestic milk products. Many denounced Lv’s comment as “false”, “bastardly” and “indecent”. Even Xinhua News Agency got in on the action, reposting critical remarks made by Weibo celebrity Xue Manzi entitled: “It’s Sad That the World’s Second Largest Economy Has to Worry about Milk Powder.”
