Nanning Attractions

Although well known as being an industrial and economic center for the region, Nanning has several interesting historical sites and tropical landscapes, both of which provide entertainment for visitors to the city.

Qingxiu Mountain is famous for the clear waters of its manmade lakes, the Ming Dynasty Pagoda known as Longxiang Tower and the planted gardens which dot the mountainside. Thailand Garden for example was built to symbolize the friendship between China and Thailand, and thousands of cycads (also known as Iron Trees) can be enjoyed in the Cycad Garden.

Visitors who would like to see a little of the history of the region without disappearing into a museum should visit the Ancient Town of Yangmei , which has been renovated to reflect how it would have looked when it was founded in the Song Dynasty. The population is still tiny, and the inhabitants seem happy to ignore much of the modernization that has swept through Nanning. A similar step back in time can be experienced at the Guangxi Ethnic Relics Center which is an open extension of the Guangxi Museum. The center has collected a number of houses, bridges, pagodas and other traditional buildings from the ethnic groups living in the area. Their exhibits include Miao houses, Zhuang bamboo, multi-storied houses and a Dong Drum Tower. A variety of ethnic foods can be sampled at the center too. The main body of the Guangxi Provincial Museum houses an impressive exhibition of nearly a thousand bronze and copper drums from the local ethnic communities in its collection as well as many exhibits of local cultural importance.

Nanhu Park is also known for its large lake: this lake is home to the annual Nanning International Dragon Boat Races. Visitors really interested in seeing impressive water features should ensure they visit the huge Detian Trans-National Waterfall which rests on the border between China and Vietnam, forming the second largest trans-national waterfall in the world second only to Niagra Falls. The lake at the bottom of the falls is extremely popular with swimmers who come to enjoy the wonderful views of lush vegetation around the water and the refreshing spray from the falls.

The Yiling Caves are a huge complex of caves situated around 18 kilometers outside of Nanning. The damp cool caves have extensive stalagmite and stalactite growth: tours through the caves are particularly welcome in summer, when they preside visitors with respite from Nanning's hot sun. Further out of the city, are the Huashan Frescos, which were discovered on the steep faces of Huashan Mountain in the 1950s. These vivid, lively frescoes were painted sometime in the Spring and Autumn Period, the Warring States and the Eastern Han Dynasty, depicting the lives of these ancient people in 1300 separate works, 300 meters high on the cliff.
