Nanjing Taxi Drivers Join Wave of Strikes

The nation-wide taxi strike movement is gathering momentum as taxi drivers across the city of Nanjing went on strike on Thursday January 8.

Hundreds of taxis parked around key transport hubs around the city including Nanjing’s two railway stations and the airport.

Alongside competition from taxi hailing apps such as Didi Da Che and Kuaidi Da Che, the drivers are protesting against the high fees they must pay to the taxi companies. One driver, Liu Xingyou said that he pays around 7,000 RMB of his 12,000 RMB monthly salary to the company- coupled with gas bills, his take home pay is only around 2,000 RMB a month.

These are extraordinarily high- drivers in Beijing and Shanghai are only required to pay around 4,000-5,000 RMB a month franchise fees.

Furthermore, several cities around the country have scrapped the 1 RMB fuel surcharge, which has further hurt drivers’ incomes.
