Recently in Nanjing there was a traffic accident whereby a seventy five year old man riding an electric bike crashed into a pedestrian. The pedestrian was unharmed but the old man fell off his bike and was knocked unconscious. The pedestrian, on seeing the old man lying motionless, ran away scared and, alas, the old man died.
After conducting investigations the police found the pedestrian surnamed Li and arrested him. Li said, after the accident he hid from the police, and seeing as no one was paying attention to him, he took his chance to escape. He is currently being held in custody.
The police explained that people think that in this situation, when a stranger bumps into them, it has nothing to do with them, but actually they have a legal responsibility to call the police, and the emergency services, and actively try to help them.
This of course should be the right course of action, but who can blame Li for running scared when false accusations following traffic accidents are unfortunately an all too common occurrence.

I'll remember to gesture that someone should call the police, before I make like a tree and leave. Silly contradictory laws in this country. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Damned if an old geezer gets himself killed by crashing into you because of his own careless driving.

poor poor Li. If he did stop he would still be made to hang around for the day anyway because the law is about as good as post blood feud laws. The number of times bikes and cars just try to push through pedestrians, one less though.
