Nanjing Offers Monthly Stipend to Children Caring for Elderly Parents

The Civil Affairs Bureau of Nanjing announced on October 12 that all children who stay home to care for elderly parents who are bed-ridden or otherwise unable to care for themselves will be eligible to receive a stipend from the government.

It is understood from current estimates that there are currently over 1.2 million elderly people in Nanjing, 98 percent of whom are cared for at home. 43, 000 of these people are in need of professional medical care.

With only 3,000 registered elderly care nurses in the city, this kind of care is basically unattainable for the average family due to financial limits and lack of availability, so the burden of care falls mainly on the children.

The local government will now offer a monthly stipend of 300-400 RMB a month, which will no doubt be welcomed by the families who take on the enormous task of elderly care; it is the least they can do since refusing to take care of your parents is now against the law.

coineineagh

just a matter of time before the merits of retirement homes are realized, and they will be no longer mocked as "uncivilized, western" practices.
