Nanjing Mayor Uses Chinglish to Make Point

Nanjing Mayor Uses Chinglish to Make Point

A few days ago, Li Jianye, the mayor of Nanjing, while discussing the chaotic examination and approval process in the city, stated that all officials in functional departments must improve their "serving the community" mentality. Speaking a bit of Chinglish, he said:

"There is no saying 'No', you must say 'How do you do'. You cannot tell others that you are unable to do something, you must enthusiastically tell them how to do it".

The Chinese transcription was: "不能说No,要说Howdoyoudo,你不能告诉别人不能做,而是要热情地告诉别人怎么做".

Numerous netizens got a kick out of this, quickly pointing out that "How do you do" is mainly used as a formal greeting, and that it doesn't mean the same thing as "how to do". Many of them recommended that the Mayor "hire a translator".
