Missing Jilin Student Found Dead in Badan Jaran Desert

A Jilin Jianzhu University student was found dead, and another was found conscious but weak by a rescue team early this morning in Inner Mongolia's Badan Jaran Desert.

The two students, Zhao and Pan, planned to hike through the Alxa League desert starting from Ejin Banner for ten days from May 17 to May 27.

They had left a note which included their traveling route, GPS navigation, rescue call data. They told their friends, “If we are not back from the desert by the 27th, call the police.”

After they did not return on Wednesday, police sent more than 30 rescue vehicles to search for the two students using the information from their note.

Pan was found conscious but weak, and was treated by rescue staff. Zhao had no vital signs and was later pronounced dead.

The Badan Jaran Desert is the third largest desert in the world, and China's second largest desert. It spans about 49,200 square kilometers. Every year, large numbers of Chinese and foreign tourists trek through the desert on camels and off-road vehicles, and on foot.

This is quite a sad story. You can't blame a couple of friends for wanting to try something new and experience life. It seems they did have some precautions in place and had planned the trip to some extent. Unfortunately nature shows no mercy.

I wonder where they went wrong. It does sound like they did prepare for it.

Nature is harsh like that. I lived in the mountains when I was young, and plenty of well-prepared people would go for excursions, only to die because the unforeseeable happened. Or they miscalculated the silliest thing. You can't always outfox the wilderness, and when things go wrong away from civilization, there aren't always lifelines. It sucks that this happened to them.

My guess would be miscalculating on how much water they needed. They ran out, and weren't able to replenish their supplies.
