Meet Regenovo, the 3D Printer from Hangzhou Who Might Make Your Next Liver

China’s first 3D printer capable of printing out tissue and other biological matter was unveiled in Hangzhou on August 6. The futuristic printer called “Regenovo” uses a combination of biocompatible polymer, inorganic material, hydrogel and live cells, or something like that.

From the outside Regenovo looks just like an ordinary printer but don’t be deceived by looks! So far, the printer has already successfully made human ear cartilage, a thumb size portion of which took a mere 50 minutes to print out. What’s even more startling is that Regenovo is also capable of printing out live cells which so far have proven to have a 90% survival rate. This process is way slower that printing out ear cartilage though – a batch of cells currently take four months to complete.

It seems there’s no stopping 3D print technology and there are already hopes that printers like Regenovo will be capable of making livers and kidneys in the next 10-20 years.

Welcome to the future!

'printing out live cells with a survival rate of 90%'? I must say I find it hard to believe, then wonder how about a complete organ, and then about the expected cancer rate of those printed out cells. Time to surf the net again! But my bets are on stem cell research for now - and not China's!
