Man’s Surgery Has Complications: Family Takes Hospital Head Hostage for Ransom
Sep 05, 2014 By eChinacities.com

On August 25 a hospital in Lijiang’s Yulong county was central to an odd dispute, as a patient’s family caused a kerfuffle.

A 39-year-old man, post surgery, and his 30 family members took hostage the head of the hospital for more than an hour following his surgery’s unfavourable outcome.

They initially demanded compensation of 300,000 RMB, but decided instead to attend court on August 26. In response, on August 27, hundreds of nurses and medical personnel took banners and posters to the streets in protest.

One nurse said that she wanted the government to take action against the patient for causing the unrest, as there is no system in place to protect doctors and medical staff as of now.

When I read an article like this I feel sorry for the family. Hospitals in China are well known for their incompetence. And there is no legal recourse for victims of malpractice. Something foreign countries learned about 100 years ago maybe even longer. Rule of law makes these kinds of behavior rare. People go to the courts for justice.
