Man Swindled in Auspicious Phone Number Scam

Man Swindled in Auspicious Phone Number Scam
Oct 09, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A man in the popular shopping area of Xidan was scammed by a mobile phone salesman when he was lured in by the promise of a lucky phone number.

Mr Gu came across a sale in Xidan that caught his eye: if you buy a Samsung W2014 phone worth over 10,000 RMB, you can get a lucky phone number ending in 999999, considered to be extremely auspicious in China, for free. Not one to pass up the chance of extra good luck, Mr Gu bought 8 of them, for the grand total of 90,000 RMB.

However, once he had paid up, the store manager informed him that in order to get the sim cards with the lucky numbers, he must pay a further 100,000 RMB in phone credit. Mr Gu was of course, displeased with this and tried to return the phones; however the manager refused. The two argued for a while, and Mr Gu eventually managed to return six of the phones, getting under 60,000 RMB back as a refund, and no lucky phone numbers.
