Man Gets Jail Time for Shooting Rare Birds

Man Gets Jail Time for Shooting Rare Birds

A man in Zhejiang Province was sentenced to eight months in jail last week, for shooting and killing nine birds whilst on his way to a wedding feast.

He shot the birds with an air gun en route to the celebration. Among the birds he killed was a barred owlet, which is endangered and under national protection.

Why he was carrying an air gun is not clear, but he will now face jail time for violating China’s wildlife protection laws.

China’s endangered species list is woefully long and stricter measures were put in place this year to try and protect endangered species. Hopefully this will act as a deterrent to would-be poachers.
