A 39-year-old man, surnamed Jiang, was arrested in Ningbo city in Zhejiang province following drug use and giving false information to the police; pretending to be a woman for 20 years.
The man, originally from Zhoushan city also in Zhejiang province, had been fooling his boss and co-workers about his sex, as the police learned from his identification card. His boss was even quoted in the SCMP as saying that he sounded and looked like a man: nobody suspected him.
The boss was also much gentler than the police about the issue, as he never questioned Jiang’s sex because it is a private matter. “She’s hard-working, gentle and quiet. So I never asked for her [identification card]”.
This is not the first time that a transgender person has confused the police. Taboo surrounding the subject may have much to do with the confusion.
