Moi Lit Leng, 39, the Malaysian man caught stealing 3.195 million Yuan worth of Cartier watches from a store on Beijing’s Wangfujing shopping street was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined 24,000 Yuan today in a Beijing court. Moi had robbed the Cartier store with a fake gun and was quickly caught by police after he fled the scene in a hijacked taxi.

Moi plead guilty to the crime, however, during his trial he said that he could not remember how and why he robbed the watch shop. He was given a comparatively light punishment because all the watches stolen were recovered. A Beijing court sentenced Moi to 12 years in prison and fined him 24,000 Yuan.

Moi was born in Malaysia and had remained there until graduating from university. In 2005, he left Malaysia for Beijing.

Moi’s family did not appear with him in court as his verdict was read. “His father recently had cancer-related surgery and is still in intensive care. His wife is in the hospital caring for him, so she did not come today.” Two Malaysian embassy staff members were present at the case, and the court allowed Moi to use a translator.

The prosecution provided a report that says that Moi’s mental state was normal when he committed the crime, and said that he should be held fully responsible for his criminal actions.
