The Ministry of Environmental Protection recently released a list that detailed the air quality of 74 cities across north and south China for the first half of 2013.

The results show that on average (out of all 74 cities) 64.4% of days during the first half of 2013 met air quality standards. Also, an average of 4.9% of these days were “heavily” polluted, while 0.4% were “severely polluted” days.

The Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei areas saw an average of 115μg/m3 of PM2.5 present in the air for the first half of 2013, which means that this part of the country failed to meet PM2.5 standards for the entire year.

57.5% of days in the Yangtze River Delta area were within air quality standards, while the Pearl River Delta area saw a figure of 79.8% respectively.

The report shows that the top ten cities with the worst air quality in China are: Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, Handan, Baoding, Hengshui, Jinan, Tianjin, Zhengzhou and Taiyuan.

The top ten cities in China with the best air quality are as follows: Haikou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Jiangmen, Lishui, Huizhou, Xiamen and Fuzhou.

Totally unsurprising that most of those cities are in Hebei.. Even the other four cities are fairly close to Hebei!
