China’s premier tennis star, Li Na, finished second at this year’s WTA Championship; a tournament often considered the fifth grand slam. Li was beaten in the final by a dominant Serena Williams in three sets, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-0.
Her runners-up place at the tournament held in Istanbul, Turkey, moves Li Na up two places in the world rankings to a career high 3rd. Li was also a losing finalist at this year’s Australian Open, capping another great year for the 31 year old from Wuhan.
It wasn’t all bad news for China though, as Na’s compatriot Peng Shui, together with her partner Hsieh Su-wei, took the doubles crown.
