The normally taboo subject of transgender people has been thrust into the limelight as China’s leading expert on sexology, Li Yinhe, revealed that she has been living with a transgender man for the past 17 years.

She posted the revelation on her Weibo page following a vicious online attack on her lifestyle that accused her of being a lesbian.

Li, who normally fiercely guards her private life, soon followed up with a response that denied the claims and explained that she has been living with a female-male transgender taxi driver for over a decade. The two have also adopted a child together.

In her response she stated: "I am, in fact heterosexual, not homosexual.I have no interest at all in the female body."

"My partner was born as a female, but identifies as a male. He is only able to fall in love with heterosexual women, not homosexual women."

She was also quick to add that, she was only clarifying her situation and “I absolutely don’t believe that I'm more normal than homosexuals or morally superior to them. Homosexuals and heterosexuals are equally normal, and equally human."

The post has sparked a rare debate on transgender issues in China, which even the People’s Daily has gotten involved in;

“Topics such as homosexuals, transgenders and AIDS used to be taboos, but they have become debatable these days and are increasingly accepted by the mainstream,” the paper wrote on it’s Weibo page;

“To respect the choice by Li Yinhe is to respect ourselves,”
