“Largest Fried Rice Dish” World Record Rejected after Chefs Feed Some to the Pigs

Chefs in Yangzhou failed to attain the Guinness World Record for largest pot of fried rice when they used some of the dish as pig feed. The Guinness World Record has strict zero-waste rules for food challenges, said representative Sharon Yang.

Photos taken at the challenge this past Friday show that a large amount of fried rice was thrown into a dumpster, and given to pigs.

The event organizers had originally planned to hand out the food to local schools and businesses. In the end, the four tons of rice had been sitting in storage for over four hours and some of it was deemed unfit for human consumption. 150 kg of the rice was thrown out or taken to a local farm for the pigs.

Yang said that Guinness always accounts for “moral, traditional, and religious elements,” when considering a new record. The Guinness Book of World Records receives about 1,000 applications each week and 95% are rejected.
