Kunming has two railway stations: Nanyao Station and the Northern Railway Station. Nanyao Station is located approximately 4 km (10 RMB, 12-15 mins in a cab) from the city centre. The station is also served by a number of bus routes, including No. 68 to the Expo 99 Garden and No. 80 to the Xiyuan Bus Station.

The Northern Railway Station is located approximately 3 kilometers north of the city center.  However, only freight stations are operating from here.
Most hotels in Kunming provide rail ticket booking services. Alternatively, travelers can go directly to the central ticket office near Nanjing Hotel during its operational hours of 8 am – 5:30 pm.  Currently, there are no trains to Shangrila or Xishuangbanna.

There are three different ways to book a train ticket in Kunming: over the phone, online and at the ticket window. Tickets can be purchased via telephone (9510 5195) up to 4-12 days in advance. If you want to reserve tickets for trains departing between 6:00-12:00, the tickets must be collected on the same day between 12:00-24:00. For tickets departing between 12:00-23:00, ticket pick up time is from 0:00-12:00. Tickets are non transferable and are void if not used on the correct day.

To book tickets online, use the site www.12306.cn. Tickets can be reserved daily from 7:00-23:00 up to twelve days in advance.
