Jiangsu Tests Anti-Pollution Masks; Only 2 Out of 120 Actually Filter PM 2.5

The Jiangsu Bureau of Quality Supervision recently conducted an investigation into efficiency of anti pollution masks, to find that only 2 of the 120 products sampled were actually effective at filtering PM2.5 particles.

The sample products were selected from a large range of the masks which are currently on the market, purchased both online and in stores, and the test criteria included efficiency of filtration and ability to resist cold.

The tests concluded that although most of the masks were advertised as able to filter out PM 2.5, only two of them actually had this feature. 112 of the masks were found to operate at under 50 percent of the required filtration efficiency.

An official from the Bureau explained that the efficiency of the mask often depends on the construction materials and the structural design, saying that those with a nose clip, that covers the whole face comfortably and also includes a chip to filter out the PM 2.5 are best.
