Jaywalkers in Shanghai Now Subject to Demeaning Podium Punishment

Jaywalkers in Shanghai Now Subject to Demeaning Podium Punishment
Jul 29, 2013 By eChinacities.com

In further attempts to “civilize” the city and crackdown on traffic regulation violators, authorities are now forcing people who jaywalk in Shanghai to climb atop a podium and read a newspaper aloud to passersby.

The logic behind the punishment is said to be related to the concept of face, with the theory that jaywalkers will presumably feel embarrassed about having to do such a thing in public.

Some have criticized the idea and have compared it to school-like punishments, and have even hinted that they would rather pay the fine (10 RMB) than be humiliated in front of a group of strangers.

Wish they would do this to the drivers that try to run down people who are on crossings too. That way pedestrians don't have to deal with drivers themselves cause police don't do jack about them.
