Jaywalkers Caught in Shenzhen Forced to Help Direct Traffic

Jaywalkers Caught in Shenzhen Forced to Help Direct Traffic
Aug 05, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Shenzhen traffic police have come up with a creative solution to deter jaywalkers. Yesterday morning, 10 traffic cops stood at a busy intersection in the city's Luohu District and punished jaywalkers by asking them to help direct traffic. The "volunteers" were also forced to wear green hats, a Chinese cultural taboo.

Pedestrians who walked into the street during red lights were given green vests, hats and flags by police and asked to help direct traffic as a punishment. In half an hour, over 20 people were stopped for jaywalking and “punished,” by the police.

One man who refused to direct traffic as a punishment got into an argument with police and was given a 20 Yuan ticket.

Those caught jaywalking were mostly office workers heading to their jobs.
