Japan's department store giant Takashimaya Co. will open its first Chinese outlet in Shanghai in 2012, company sources said Tuesday.

Takashimaya will become the second Japanese department store operator after Isetan Co., a unit of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd., to open stores in China to sustain growth while demand at home kept sagging.

Takashimaya said the store will offer a broad range of products from food to luxury clothing, occupying a retail space of about 40,000 square meters from the basement floor to the seventh floor inside a 30-story office building.

The department store chain said it also eyes to open outlets in other Chinese cities in the future.

The Shanghai store will be the third large-scale overseas store for Takashimaya following its outlets in Taiwan and Singapore.
