Illegally Constructed Churches Demolished in Wenzhou
Aug 05, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A number of illegally constructed churches and crosses were demolished in Wenzhou recently. Anger from the churches' clergy and congregation led to an outcry in the Western media.

Christianity and Catholicism specifically have developed rapidly in the recent years in Wenzhou. A number of churches built in recent years were not constructed in accordance to the city's regulations.

In Wenzhou's Yongjia County, construction of a 1,800 square meter church was approved. When the church was actually built, it took up 10,000 square meters.

In addition, many crosses have been taken down from churches for being too heavy. According to Zhejiang building codes, crosses must be attached to the wall of a church and can only be 1/10 the length of the building's facade.

Let me fix the part about the crosses: "The crosses were declared illegal after the fact with no clear or consistent reason as to why. All praise the CC big P dance Parteh."
