An unnamed Jiangsu government official was recently caught on camera stating, “If the police don’t beat people, what’s the point of keeping them?” The official, who was speaking from a complaint bureau in Suzhou, continued to say, “The police are the government’s violence machine.”

The video has since gone viral, and has come under fire from countless netizens criticizing police violence. The remarks reportedly came when a resident complained about the developer of an apartment building, though no further information has been revealed.

The official in question has apparently been told to “reflect deeply” by his superiors regarding his comments.
