At the end of last week Beijing issued an orange alert due to the hazardous levels of pollution that had blanketed the city. Apparently the smog should clear by Thursday, but if it doesn’t Beijing may have to issue a red alert – the highest alert. This is something they have never done before because the government would be forced to close schools and pull half the city’s cars of the road, the implementation of which would be very difficult, according to Reuters.
While Beijing has issued a number of plans to curb pollution, including a 982 billion project to clean rivers and the sources of the pollutants, although results from this project are some time away.
