Christmas day saw hundreds of primary and secondary school teachers go on strike in Luotian in Hubei Province. The protest started as only a handful of teachers and ended up with more than 500 as hundreds of teachers joined their colleagues in an act of solidarity.
The protest are over the low wages, mainly as compared to those of workers in other public sectors such as hospitals. The teachers feel that the subsidies set for them in 2010 are no longer enough in today’s financial age and argue that they are being deprived of nearly 20,000 RMB per year.
Six hours after the strike began officials arrived on the scene to begin negotiations and try to appease the frustrated crowd.
