Hubei Mountain Villagers Defy Gravity with Shaky Makeshift Zip Wire

This is certainly not for the fainthearted.

It was recently reported that residents of a mountain village southeast of Hefeng County, Hubei, have been transporting themselves to and from mountains for 16 years using a shaky-looking iron basket suspended on a zip wire.

Villagers of Yushan Village, which lies 150km from the nearest county town, are in one way blessed as they are surrounded by green pastures and rolling hills as far as the eye can see, however there are no roads nearby and it takes a full day to walk up and down the mountains to and from the village. In 1997, a 1,000m long rope was constructed from one mountain to another with a view to make life more convenient for villagers who need to head out. Hanging gingerly under the rope is an iron basket that hovers over a healthy 480m high drop.

Despite the obvious scenic advantages, would you risk it?
