Jun 23, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Hong Kong is the most expensive city in the world for expats according to an annual survey by consultancy firm Mercer. The Guardian reported the survey results yesterday.

Luanda was named the second most expensive city. The Angolan capital was ranked first last year. Zurich, Switzerland came in third, followed by Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Shanghai, Geneva, and N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. Beijing was ranked tenth.

A few of the cheapest cities for expats include Windhoek, Namibia, and Cape Town, South Africa.

This is the 22nd year the survey has been conducted. It covers 209 cities on five continents. The survey compares the cost of 200 items in each city including housing, transportation, the price of a cup of coffee, and the price of a beer. The survey allows large companies to estimate cost of living for employees stationed in different countries.
