High-Speed Railway Commuter Spends Nearly 2600 RMB a Month on Transport
Oct 27, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Living in Tianjin, Mr Lu takes the high-speed train between Tianjin and Beijing every day in order to work in Beijing’s Zhongguancun, in Haidian district. Each month, this costs him 2600 RMB in transportation fees.

According to Mr Lu’s, taking the high-speed train is better than inner-city public transport during rush hour, and his choices mean that his rent situation is much better, as transportation costs are cheaper than renting in Beijing.

On an average day, Mr Lu wakes up around 7:00, and arrives at work around 9:00. Every evening he spends approximately two and a half hours getting back home, where he arrives around 21:30 after finishing work at 19:00.

Every day, he spends 4 RMB on the Beijing subway, 109 RMB on the train ticket between Beijing and Tianjin, and 4.8 RMB on the Tianjin subway. In total, that means he spends about 118 RMB on transport a day, which adds up to approximately 2596 RMB per 22-day working month.

However, Mr Lu is not alone, as more and more people decide to live outside of Beijing and commute in using the high-speed railway network.

Not a bad idea. 30 minutes to Beijing.

There are a lot of people who live in Philadelphia to commute to New York City for some of the same reasons. In many parts of China this kind of commuting is possible if a person can conveniently get to the train station of each city. It is often faster to travel between cities than deal with the traffic.

Sounds like a smart solution to a lot of problems like traffic congestion, high renting fees and more. I agree with the above though... not really news worthy.

Is that really news worthy? The same happens in other places and the world over. A couple of hours commuting time going to work and returning each day is the standard lifestyle of millions of people.
