Harbin is one of the largest hubs for rail transportation in China, second only to Shenyang. It has two railway stations. Generally speaking, trains terminating at or starting from the city will use Harbin East Railway station: through-trains stop at Harbin Railway station. Trains leave Harbin for a number of cities all over Heilongjiang Province, Inner Mongolia, and Jilin Province. They also connect Harbin to cities further afield including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhenzhou, Xuzhou, Qiqihar, Mudanjiang, Suihua and Jiamusi.
In addition, a number of bullet trains run from Harbin to Jilin (3 hours), Shenyang (4.5 hours), Beijing (9 hours), and Tianjin (9.5 hours).

International travel by rail is possible, as Harbin has routes into Siberia and Russia. This option can be complicated though, as visas for Siberia and Russia need to be arranged in advance. This is usually best done in Beijing but can sometimes be obtained in Shenyang.

There are three ways to buy train tickets in Harbin: telephone booking, online booking and purchasing tickets at the ticket window. Tickets can be booked via the phone (call 9510 5105) as early as twelve days in advance and as late as four days in advance (including that day). Tickets ordered between 6:00-12:00 will be ready for pick up that day from 12:00-24:00. Tickets ordered between 12:00-23:00 will be ready for pick up that day from 0:00-12:00. Tickets not used on the correct day will be deemed void. Tickets booked online can be ordered at www.12306.cn from 7:00 to 23:00 up to 12 days in advance. Tickets are sold at the station window up to 10 days in advance.
