Jul 05, 2010 By eChinacities.com

On June 9th, temperatures reached 36.0℃, the hottest day ever recorded in Harbin on that date since 1961. On June 24th, there was another high temperature, this time 36.9℃, and the scorching sun continued for several consecutive days. Because of the excess heat, more than 700 tons of watermelons were sold daily, and the sale of cold drinks reached millions of RMB during the month of June. Retailers have been stocking up on air conditioners and fans, as they have been the fastest selling home appliances. Harbin, once called the “ice city”, currently resembles more of a scorching hot furnace. This has been the earliest summer in Harbin in the last 6 decades, and the city has experienced the most consecutive days of high temperatures in the last 3 decades.
