From the years 2000 to 2009, the average stay for foreign visitors to Hangzhou has seen an increase from 2.2 days to 2.9 days. Of the nighttime activities and recreations available, nighttime performances like “Impression West Lake”, “An Ancient Town of the Song Dynasty”, and “Night of West Lake” have proven to be quite popular – as are shopping and recreational centers dotted throughout Qinghefang and Silk City. When compared with the year 2000, foreign visitors spending the night in Hangzhou have increased their average daily spending from 190.99 USD/day to 209.82 USD.

There are five major areas in Hangzhou where bars and club venues are clustered in the city; the establishments are centered around Wushan Plaza, Hubin Rd, Baochu Rd, Shuguang Rd and Huanglong Stadium respectively. There are over 40 bars in the 5 areas. Foreign visitors generally like to visit music bars dotted around Shuguang Rd, while Chinese tourists usually prefer bars located at Hubin Rd and Nanshan Rd – near major scenic attractions in the city. Visitors to Hangzhou have been steadily increasing by the year and average overnight stays for these visitors are also on the rise, thus Hangzhou’s bar industry has greatly benefited from this increase; bars/venues bringing in an annual revenue between 150 - 200 million RMB are numbered at seven or eight in the city.
