At the end of October, it was made public that 497,000 people in China have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS since the first case in China in 1985, the Global Times reports. Over the past three decades, more than 149,000 people have died from it.

A chart identifies that 64.6% of HIV infections are a result of heterosexual acts, 24.9% a result of homosexual acts, 5.8% a result of drug injections, 0.9% of cases are passed from mother to baby, and 3.8% of cases have other causes.

The Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to strengthen screening for HIV/AIDS, especially in high risk groups, and to set up prevention funds.
