HK Rumor Blames Deflation of Giant Rubber Duck on Mainlanders’ Cigarettes

“Rubber Duck”, the creation of Dutch conceptual artist Florentijin Hofman, gave many a Hong Kong citizen a cheerful delight as it sat in the harbor of Tsim Sha Tsui’s promenade for the past several weeks.

On May 14 however, the duck sadly deflated. Many locals speculated over the precise cause of its flattening, with some pointing their fingers at vandals and others joking that it had got lung cancer from the polluted harbor air.

However, a fresh rumor going around blames the duck’s deflation on cigarette burns caused by butts flicked by Mainland tourists. Ridiculous as it may be, the rumor has hit the spotlight of late, with some Mainland news institutions including CCTV vehemently denying the claims.

Judging from the picture, if the rumor were true, the Mainland tourists must have some pretty strong wrists to be able to flick that far. Or maybe they just caught an updraft.

At present, the deflated duck has been put to rest and folded up in a pile on the side of the harbour. The official “cause of death” is strong winds and waves. RIP large rubber ducky.
