On April 30, a Hong Kong man surnamed Lam was busted at Shenzhen customs for trying to smuggle eight pounds of gold into the Mainland—via the insides of his sneakers!

Arriving at the Luohu Port carrying a bag and dressed casually, customs officers thought something was odd when they spotted Lam walking at a slow, heavy pace. After stopping him, they found four bars of gold weighing a total of four kilograms (eight pounds), valued at 1.2 million RMB.

Lam’s case is currently being handled by the Shenzhen Customs Anti-Smuggling Bureau, which says that this was the biggest case of gold smuggling in Shenzhen so far this year.
