Guangzhou’s ‘Baby Safety Island’ Receives 100 Abandoned Babies in 17 Days
Feb 24, 2014 By eChinacities.com

During the first 17 days of opening, Guangdong Provinces’ first Qiying Island, or Baby Safety Island, more than 100 babies were left there. ‘Baby safety’ island is a well-equipped place, including an incubator, blankets and an ultraviolet germicidal lamp, where parents can leave their unwanted babies to be put up for adoption. The island is located next to Guangzhou city orphanage.

This project has already been set up in other cities, including Xiamen. These islands have sparked controversy since being set up as, on one hand, some people say it tempts parents into leaving they children, while other say it provides a safe space for China’s abandoned babies who would most likely die if they were left other places.
