Apr 30, 2009 By eChinacities.com

Guangzhou was to carry out measures to promote a waste classification program and strive to achieve a target of recycling 80% of all waste materials within 5 years.

The problem of how to realize the reduction of waste materials through classification is a difficult one that has troubled Guangzhou for a long time. Guangzhou would establish waste classification program in charge of organizing, leading and coordinating waste classification work to be led by the designated competent vice mayor. The implementation of the program will be carried out by the Guangzhou City Appearance and Environmental Sanitation Bureau and the Supply and Distribution Marketing General Agency.

In addition, it was advised that Guangzhou shall gradually prohibit the use of such disposable items as disposable plastic bags and disposable chopsticks in hotels, marketplaces and restaurants on the basis of a national ban on plastic bags, and will foster the resource recycling product marketplace and encourage enterprises and residents to use more recyclable products.
