Haizhu District initiated its sewage treatment and comprehensive riverlet renovation project via a systematic program including 10 projects launched simultaneously on March 9th. The program includes the Kanglechong, Xiluchong, and Shiliugang River projects as well as the Longtanchong comprehensive renovation project, The Shixi floodgate reconstruction and pumping station project, the drainage reconstruction projects of the Binjiangheng Road area, the Chigangxi Road project, the Nanbian Street to Dongwu Lane project, and the Houjiaoxi Road and Haiyinnan Community Comprehensive Renovation Projects are all included in this program.

The Haizhu Artificial Lake, situated on the south-end of Guangzhou's new central axis, is under the overall planning and design phase of this program, all of which are expected to start construction in June. The Haizhu Artificial Lake is located between the Longtan Park and Dongfeng Park areas, with 10,000 Mu (666.67 hectares) of fruit trees surrounding it. The Lake will connect with the Shiliugang River, as well as the Daweichong, Datangchong, Shangchongchong, Yangweanchong and Shiluchong rivers, forming a pattern of water sources feeding the lake with six water veins, all with a planned area of about 1500 Mu (100 hectares), next only to Baiyun Lake.

The functions of the two are similar, mainly planned for floodwater storage and water supply, they work together as a landscape lake at ordinary times while at the same time, functioning to store rainwater and prevent floods. At present, the design and project bidding are under way. The project is planned to start construction before the end of June this year and to complete the main body of the project in a year.
