Guangzhou Man Receives 10,000 RMB Fine for Renting to Illegal Foreigner

A Guangzhou resident surnamed Liang was fined 10,000 RMB for renting an apartment to foreigners who were living in China illegally.

Liang owns a house on Xiatang Xi road in Yuexiu district and got in touch with a foreign male (whose nationality wasn’t specified) through an estate agent who wished to rent his apartment. The man couldn’t produce a valid residence permit or passport as he said his visa was being processed. He also never registered at the local police station.

During a random inspection of the area by local police in May, the man was still unable to produce any valid form of ID.

Apparently home owners are liable for fines and even administrative detention for not following the correct protocol when renting out to foreigners.
