Guangzhou Businesses Ignore New Light Pollution Law

Guangzhou Businesses Ignore New Light Pollution Law
May 08, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Guangzhou’s garish LED light displays have led it to become known as ‘the city without night’. That was all supposed to change May 1 when a new ban on light displays between the hours of 22:30 and 07:30 came into effect, but the ban appears to have been ignored by businesses for the most part as there has been little to no change since the ban.

Ironically, one of the organizations ignoring the ban was the local government itself who broadcast an enormous LED message on Peace World Plaza reminding businesses to turn off their lights.

On top of this, the light displays around the city have been blazing out at 1,000 lumens. That’s more than 60 times the recommended national standard for light pollution which is currently 15 lumens.
