Guangzhou Asian Games Outnumber Beijing Olympic Games in Number of Venues and Events

During the 16th Asian Games next year, over 30,000 players, coaches, sports organizations technical officials and media staff from across Asia will participate in the Games. Although the number of players participating in the Guangzhou Asian Games approximates that of the Beijing Olympic Games, the number of events and venues outnumber those of the Olympics.


It was announced that the Guangzhou Asian Games are scheduled to open on November 12 and o close on November 27, 2010, lasting for a total of 15 days. This Asian Games series has 42 major events and 464 minor events (Gold Medals). The 42 major events include 28 Olympic events and 14 non-Olympic classified events. The 2010 Asian Games will be held at 50 completion venues, 20 training venues, and 10 backup venues, among which a total of 12 venues to be newly built and 68 existing ones enlarged. It is estimated that this Asian Games attract 14,000 competitors and accompanying officials, 65,000 international and Asian individual event sports technical officials, 10,000 registered media staff, and over 2,000 members of the macro Olympic Council of Asia from 45 countries and regions all over Asia.


The Asian Games for Disabled Persons will open on December 12 and close on December 19, 2010, lasting for 8 days. The Disabled Persons Games is tentatively scheduled to host 28 events. It is estimated that about 3,000 players and 900 technical officials will attend this part of the Games.
