Guangdong Shoe Factory Strike Gathers Momentum

Guangdong Shoe Factory Strike Gathers Momentum
Apr 18, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A strike over unpaid social benefits in Guangdong has swelled to include roughly 30,000 workers. The protesters have been on strike on and off since April 5 but the strike has snowballed, making it one of the largest strikes of a private business in Chinese history.

The workers of Yue-Yuen Industrial Ltd, a Taiwanese company which makes shoes for famous brands such as Nike, Adidas and Timberland, want their employers to make social security payments as required by Chinese law. The demands include free meals and accommodation as well as solutions to cases of unpaid social insurance, improper labor contracts and low wages.

The problem of social security in factories is long standing but is becoming increasingly caustic due to increased awareness among the migrant workforce of their legal rights.

Yue-Yuen Industrial Ltd made an offer on Tuesday but it was rejected and the strike continues.

The local government is now getting involved in negotiations.

Shouldn't the government be the ones making the company follow the law?

China can't become a superpower unless they fix their labor issues. The social insurance is required by law here. They can't seem to pull it together and enforce things. Or, unwillingness to enforce it. I swear that guanxi causes more problems for this country than any other aspect. I laugh when someone thinks their guanxi is a good thing. It's the very reason why they're still stuck in the dark ages.
