Garden Community to Appear in Guangzhou
Apr 30, 2009 By eChinacities.com

In order to embody the rich and complex mix of cultures Guangzhou can boast as a garden city, city officials plan to combine four communities along the traditional central axis - Dufu, Yue Hua Da Yuan, Lian Hua Jing and Hua Ning Li - into a single garden community with elements of the Lingnan culture as the unifying theme, announced Liu Guoquan, an official of the Yuexiu District Government.

The traditional central axis is located in the downtown area of Guangzhou, and features such well-known monuments as the Sun Yat-sen Monument, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the office building for the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou People's Congress, City Hall, Renming Park, the Guangzhou Liberation Monument and the Haizhu Bridge.

The planning phase of the project has been unveiled and will be under discussion by scholars and community residents next month. The project is scheduled to be completed by June, for the coming 16th Asian Games.

Guangzhou is a city with over 2,000 years of history but, unfortunately, the historical sites scattered in the older urban areas are not familiar to citizens or tourists. Most of citizens do not even know the location of the traditional center axis. This project is designed to promote Guangzhou history and put these important historical and cultural sites on the map.
