France, Germany and Italy to Join Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
Mar 17, 2015 By eChinacities.com

On March 17, European officials announced in Beijing that France, Germany and Italy will follow in the footsteps of the United Kingdom and work with Chinese leadership by joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The Western countries will join despite disapproval from the United States.

The British government previously announced that it plans to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank which is currently worth $50 billion. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is seen as a potential rival to the World Bank headquartered in Washington D.C.

Australia, an important United States ally in the Asia Pacific region, previously declined to join the new bank after facing pressure from the U.S. However, Australia recently stated that it may reconsider its position.
