In what is being called a new Chinese sex scandal record, Liu Zhijun, the former Railway Minister, was recently accused of sleeping with the entire female cast of the “Dream of the Red Chamber” television series (as well as many other young women), in exchange for political favor with a Shanxi businesswoman named Ding Shumiao.
Liu was expelled from the party in May 2011 over allegations of corruption and was singled out for his central role in the Wenzhou train crash later that year in July 2011. Until recently, he was believed to still be awaiting trial for the corruption charges filed against him. The “sex scandal record” story broke on Weibo on February 4, when cameraman Li Zhencheng posted the following message:
“On February 1, in the Harbin Intermediate People's Court during the trial of Luo Jinbao, the chair of China Railway Container Transport Co. Ltd, the following information was exposed: Shanxi business woman Ding Shumiao used her connections to the new Dream of the Red Chamber television series [she was an investor] to have the entire cast sleep with Liu Zhijun in exchange for an 800 million RMB intermediary fee for a railway project. He slept with the 12 leading actresses and even with the servant girls and female employees; he slept with the entire production one-by-one."
Since the television series was broadcast in 2010, its leading actresses Bai Bing (白冰), Yang Mi (杨幂) and Yao Di (姚笛) have all gone on to become quit famous. Even while the series was airing, similar reports were showing up online. At that time, Li Xiaowan, the show's producer, made vague comments about the necessity of adopting new laws to ensure that productions could be 'clean'. A reporter contacted Li after news from the trial broke, but she wasn't answering the phone calls. The allegations are currently under investigation.
