Former Politburo Standing Committee Member Zhou Yongkang Arrested
Jul 30, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Former Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang was placed under house arrest yesterday in the highest profile arrest in decades. He is being charged with “serious disciplinary violations”, although further details weren’t provided.

Rumors of Zhou Yongkang’s possible arrest have been flying for months as searches related to the former head of China Petroleum were heavily censored. Bans on searching his name were lifted yesterday following an announcement on CCTV, and the hashtag “ZhouYongKangPutUnderInvestigation” reached 4.3 million views on Weibo barely two hours after the news broke.

As a former member of the PSC, head of domestic security and ties with China Petroleum, Zhou was one of the most powerful men in the country. His investigation and subsequent arrest is a signifier that no one is immune from the current anti corruption campaign.
