Jun 20, 2012 By eChinacities.com

On the afternoon of June 19, on Guangyuan Xilu in Guangzhou, a large gathering of foreigners took to the streets to protest the death of a foreigner the day before. Police had no choice but to send in riot police to maintain order. The Yuexiu District police later persuaded the foreigners to gradually disband. According to reports, the demonstration occurred because on June 18 at around 13:00, a physical altercation arose between a Chinese electric motorbike driver and a foreign passenger over the price of the ride at the entrance of the Tongtong Hotel on Guangyuan Xilu. The foreign man was taken away by police but later died while in police custody. No information about the cause of his death has been released so far.
