The Forbidden City in Beijing is planning to cap numbers of daily visitors to 80,000 a day, Shan Jixiang, the director of the museum confirmed on Tuesday.

The proposal has been submitted to authorities and is awaiting approval. Shan cited safety reasons as the main motivation behind the new plans.

The new policy doesn’t have an official start date, but Shan said it could begin by this summer.

The Forbidden City is the most visited museum in the world, with 15 million visitors in 2014, followed by the Louvre with 9.2 million visitors.

On two days last year, the Forbidden City received over 140,000 visitors per day.

Shan also hopes to even the distribution of visitors throughout the year as the museum is much quieter during the winter months. The museum is now planning to offer 20 RMB tickets on its website during the winter in hopes of attracting more visitors in low season.

'The Forbidden City is the most visited museum in the world, with 15 million visitors in 2014, followed by the Louvre with 9.2 million visitors.' Small minded people never get this, it is the quality of visitors that counts.
