December 13 this year will see the first official Victims of the Nanjing Massacre National Mourning Day take place. In the morning, the party and state leaders will attend a ceremony at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall.
The date marks the beginning of the incident in 1937 when Japanese soldiers began the massacre, which consequently became one of the most infamous events of the 20th Century. Over the following 40 days thousands of people were brutally slaughtered with most estimates putting the death toll in the hundreds of thousands.
